The QWERTY layout, named for the first six letters of its top row, was developed by Christopher Latham Sholes and his collaborators in the early 1870s for the first commercially successful typewriter, manufactured by E. Remington and Sons from 1873. Early typewriter mechanisms used metal type bars that struck upward to hit the paper, and if two adjacent bars were struck in quick succession, they could physically collide and jam. Sholes's solution was to rearrange the keyboard so that commonly paired letters in English were positioned further apart on the mechanism, reducing jam frequency — a real, practical engineering fix for a real, practical mechanical problem, achieved partly by making the layout somewhat less efficient for raw typing speed than a layout optimized purely for finger movement would have been.
The jamming problem QWERTY was designed to solve was substantially resolved by the early twentieth century as typewriter mechanisms improved, and by the 1930s, alternative layouts explicitly designed for speed and ergonomics existed and had been tested. The most famous, the Dvorak Simplified Keyboard, patented by August Dvorak and William Dealey in 1936, placed the most frequently used English letters on the home row and was demonstrated in various studies to allow measurably faster typing with less finger movement. Despite this, Dvorak and other alternative layouts never displaced QWERTY at any meaningful scale. By the time typewriters gave way to computer keyboards in the late twentieth century, QWERTY was so thoroughly entrenched — in touch-typing instruction, in an enormous existing base of trained typists, and eventually in international standards — that it simply carried over into the digital era without serious challenge.
